Making his first trip as pontiff to Africa, Pope Benedict XVI said today (March 17) that handing out condoms is not the solution for combatting AIDS.
AIDS “is a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problems.” he said.
The Pope’s stance is in line with the Vatican’s age-old pro-abstinence position but this is the first time he has spoken publicly on the matter.
And just for the sake of validity of facts, his comments are untrue according to the World Health Organization. Says a rep: “These incorrect statements about condoms and HIV are dangerous when we are facing a global pandemic, which has already killed more than 20 million people, and currently affects at least 42 million.”
Come On, in the year 2009, I think the Pope of all people should be more open-minded. You cant force abstinence and it surely doesn’t work with all the images the media is blasting at the public. The best advice he could give the people is to use condoms, but I guess that would go against his beliefs.
